Synopsis for ajffrecommends.org
A girl from a tiny Russian shtetl fights to keep her Jewish faith in this musical adaptation of the young-adult novel that depicts the universal themes of motherhood and feminism. Escaping the Cossack pogroms, Miriam Aronowitch (Abby Shapiro) and her mother, Anya (Rivka Siegel), flee to Victorian England to build a new life. When her mother falls critically ill, Miriam finds herself at the mercy of the foreboding Greytowers orphanage and cruel matron Miss Grimshaw (Judy Winegard). Only a devotion to Judaism enables Miriam to rekindle the faith of her young companions. The film is the first theatrical release by Kol Neshama, an all-female performing arts conservatory. Blending the beauty of Torah with original song, the film adheres to traditional Jewish values of modesty and is intended for female audiences only.
